The Man that made the bits

I was the man that made the bits.

That stop your wheels from coming off.

I also made the things.

That stop the burglars getting in.

I worked hard and learned my trade.

With lathes and mills and grinders.

I made components that are endless.

For the masses who are thoughtless.

They don’t appreciate the quality.

They just use them and abuse them.

It may only be a wheel nut but where would we be without them.

It took patience skill and learning.

To make this nut you are turning.

Don’t take it all for granted.

Think of the men who made it.

In factory’s full of men who never see the sun.

Who work all day for not enough pay.

Items you use every day.

In conditions that cause mental decay.

Engineering is dirty and noisy.

It damages eyes and ears.

And on limbs it is wearing joints away.

And still they are proud of their skills.

And so should we be.

This country owes much to men like these.

The machinists who make the things.

That make this country work.
