THE CURSE OF COVID

Every day in lockdown we are losing a bit more of our normality

Our minds are changing accepting all of the little restrictions

It’s been going on so long we don’t really notice the change within ourselves

Greeting friends and relatives without a handshake or a kiss

walking around people to maintain social distance

Washing our hands so often that our skin has dried out

remembering to take a mask whenever we go out just in case

We seem to have become immune to rising numbers of deaths

The way numbers are reported changed to make it seem not to bad

I hope this ordeal ends before we all lose our humanity

IN THE EARLY MORNING LIGHT

In the early morning light from a steamy window.

I spy a shadowy figure walking elegantly past the parked cars.

It makes no sound and appears to have no one to fear.

Its exhaled breath floats away like a spirit in the chilly morning air.

I stand and look down on the scene holding my breath in case it hears my breathing.

I know it’s not likely through the double glazing.

I stand in wonder at the incongruity of beauty in such a place.

I always thought that they lived in areas of open space.

In a highly populated area with the road noises constant hum.

The late night drunks that fight and shout around the streets.

The intrusive sound of sirens that pierces what goes for silence here.

Who would have thought that in the poor end of town I would see the Bury St Edmunds Unicorn?

YELLOW HAMMER

How appropriate that Michael gove is heading up the project yellow hammer. Named after a bird that is on the red list due to its decling numbers. Hopefuly much like the conservative party perhaps they should be on the red list?

A PERFECT SUMMER AFTERNOON

Sitting in the sun with her cool silk dress gently rippled in the warm breeze

Enjoying the quiet moment, in a little dappled shade from the trees

No noise to disturb the peaceful scene, except the gentle hum of the bees

No stress or calls for help, no crying children clinging to her knees

A cool glass of pimms with the condensation forming on the glass

A cigarette burning in a long holder dangles from her hand

No unpleasant thoughts within her head abide

The glass syringe has fallen on the lawn, she’s played her final hand

The husband looks down at the beauty sitting there, resists the stroke of the hair

The parents stand and stare why didn’t we know, why weren’t we there

The police look for evidence of foul play, and have opinions they can’t share

The children weep for their loss, the only honest emotion on this tranquil summer afternoon
